Sigma Designs has announced a new development kit that leverages an Ultra wideband (UWB) chipset for home theater in a box solutions that essentially eliminates the need for speaker wire.
This solution gives consumer electronics manufacturers the ability to design a reliable wireless HTiB that does not interfere with microwave oven signals, WiFi, Bluetooth, mobile phones or other home appliances. The development kit comes in three combinations: 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1 that range over 40 meters LOS (Line-Of-Sight) and 20 meters NLOS (Non-Line-Of-Sight).
We’re starting to see more HTiB solutions rely at least partially on wireless speakers, the latest announcements from Sony include S-AIR technology, which offers wireless rear speakers. Consumers hate to fiddle with speaker wiring, so there’s little doubt there will be much interest to see this technology come to fruition.
