A few weeks back Gefen announced an ultra wideband (UWB) wireless solution to help people set up their HDMI connections. Designed largely for hard to reach places, like projectors mounted to ceilings, the wireless HDMI extender solves a lot of problems and is able to handle the high bandwidth needs of high definition video.
Gefen’s HDMI Extender sends hi-def resolutions to 1080p (24fps) and 5.1 surround sound up to 10 meters (33-feet) with no cables required. There are two units that come in the set; the sender unit supplies two HDMI inputs and a third input for component video with two-channel audio. The receiver plugs into your home theater system and operates as a source switcher, allowing users to access three sources on the same display input.
To increase reliability and performance, this Wireless for HDMI Extender offers built-in interference cancellation to avoid noise from nearby electronics operating in the wireless band, including cell phones and Wi-Fi networks.
Of course at a retail of $999, this solution isn’t for everyone, but it is a big technological leap and a sign of things to come as they’re able to make more wireless solutions like this at lower prices over time. We’re already seeing many home theater in a box systems including wireless speakers; wireless video transmission is the next logical step. Who knows, maybe in a few more years all we’ll have to do is plug in the power cord.
