Everyone makes a media box it seems, Asus announced their O!Play HDP-R1 HD Media Player back in June. It’s easy to forget, with Western Digital, Netgear, Seagate and others all jumping into this space with new products in the interim. How is Asus different or better? Well, they have the price right at $100 and HDMI output, which gets them started off on the right foot and offsets the silly O!Play moniker.
Asus is claiming a few other points of differentiation too, including ”exclusive music shuffle feature.” The O!Play HDP-R1 provides a music shuffle function via dedicated button on the remote control. The unit also features eSata support, which is roughly six times faster than transfers over USB 2.0, which is standard fare with the competitors.
Other features include:
- Video formats- MPEG1/2/4, H.264, VC-1, RM/RMVB
- Video file extensions – .mp4, .mov, .xvid., .avi., .dvix., .asf, .wmv, .mkv, .rm, .rmvb, .flv, .ts, .m2ts, .dat, .mpg, .vob
- Audio formats – MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, WAV, FLAC, AIFF
- Image formats – JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, TIFF
- Outputs - HDMI, Composite Audio/Video, Optical Digital Audio
- Inputs - USB2.0, eSATA/USB2.0 combo port, RJ-45 LAN port
- Power consumption <10W
The Asus O!Play HDP-R1 is shipping now for a suggested retail; of $99.99.
