Boxee Streaming Box Unveiled

Written on Dec 8, 2009 by Brian and filed under News

D-Link and Boxee have jointly announced the new Boxee media streaming box. The Boxee box features the latest Boxee open source software designed to aggregate networked and online content, along with hardware features including HDMI, SPDIF and RCA Audio outputs, 2 USB ports, WiFi (802.11n) and wired Ethernet. The box is expected to be available in 2Q 2010 for $200.

The box definitely isn’t short on design, the sinking cube look has visual appeal, though it will certainly stand out in most home theater environments. That’s either a good thing or a bad thing depending on perspective. D-Link didn’t release full specs either, so we’re not entirely sure how big the box is, but the photos probably make it look larger than it really is. It might only be twice the size of your typical wireless router or media streamer.

What is Boxee?

The Boxee software provides access to just about any content available online or within your network – all with a simple interface. Sources include the likes of YouTube, Pandora, last.fm, Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, university content, FORA.tv, Kid Mango, Next New Networks and many more. Users can also subscribe to video content via RSS or XML feeds.
